Casting a Shadow: Creating the Alfred Hitchcock Film

September 28–December 9, 2007
Main Gallery and Print, Drawing, and Photography Study Center

Albert Whitlock, production design study for visual effect, The Birds, 1963, gouache on Mylar matted over gouache on illustration board. Robert Boyle Collection, Margaret Herrick Library, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Alfred Hitchcock presented himself as the sole author of his films — his movies were the direct translation of his creative genius to the screen. In reality, however, Hitchcock was a deeply collaborative artist, working intensely with actors, producers, cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, and production and sound designers to create what the public knew as “an Alfred Hitchcock film.” Through drawings, paintings, storyboards, and production documents, this exhibition explores a film making process that thrived on teamwork, with the director's colleagues contributing critical ideas and Hitchcock engaged in creative collaboration frame by frame. The exhibition, which will include computer and multimedia technology, will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, a film series with speakers, and a symposium.

Shadows from the Photography Collection

The Art Institute of Chicago
111
South Michigan Avenue
Chicago, Illinois 60603-6404

December 1, 2007–February 24, 2008 - Galleries 2-4

Overview: Shadow plays an interesting role in art. Its fleeting presence is difficult to depict yet the medium of photography is able to represent it perfectly. The photographs on display in The Other Side of Light capture abstract geometric forms as well as exact replicas of the human body, creating a deep curiosity towards a shadow’s inherent elusiveness. This exhibition draws over 60 works entirely from the Art Institute’s permanent collection, including works by Manuel Alvarez-Bravo, Lee Friedlander, André Kertész, Nathan Lerner, and Paul Strand, among others.
